I need a haircut badly.
Well, I have used that phrase many times, as I am sure others have too, only to be followed by a remark by some wag, (and I am one) saying I can cut it badly for you if you like. This leads me to my blog subject, which as you may have guessed is a haircut.
Much to the annoyance of my wife, and in spite of the comments from various friends, my hair has, or had become far too long. I was not, despite the remarks received, trying to recapture my youth, far from it, although I am courageously clinging to the wreckage. Since living in Cyprus I have found it difficult to find a decent barber. Now before I go further into this hairy subject, I have been spoilt. My Brother-in-Law in the UK owns a salon and he has cut my hair for over thirty years and is a true professional, knowing how your hair grows, knowing what suits and what doesn’t etc. so when I arrived here I could not settle with anyone barber. All used clippers straight up and down, no finesse.
This particular day, however, I found my future barber, at Pambos Barber- shop Cholraka in Paphos. I waited a short while and watched an unfolding story on the plasma TV regarding the EU, what else.
The door opened and a young girl walked in, and I mean young, looked no more than sixteen, but then policemen are looking younger each day as well, yes clinging to the wreckage again, anyway after she walked by me she got to the end chair smiled and beckoned me over. Now, I thought, what is going to happen, I cannot leave so over I went, my basic Greek did not work so I indicated just a tidy up, that will do I thought, I will let the boys cut it short on my next visit. She looked at my hair, which was a total mess.
I was then liberally sprayed with water and off she went: comb, scissors, comb, scissors, after a few minutes’ I was becoming more relaxed, this girl knew her business, her scissor work was fantastic, she then finished off with the clippers, next a cut-throat razor was sharpened, this I must admit made me sweat a bit, but she expertly shaped my neck and sideburns’. After all this she then used the dryer and brush to shape the sides: a wax and final cutthroat to finish. She shook the gown and, thinking that was it, I started to get up, she held up her hand, and then sprayed refreshing lotion around my neck, I didn’t want to leave, the end result….brilliant.
